Even though these cities have a wide range of interesting features, there are many places across West Africa that are just amazing. I think it’s high time these hidden gems are uncovered and brought to the limelight.
So if you’re planning to go on a quick getaway, you should venture off the beaten track and visit any of these seriously underrated West African getaways.
1. Sal, Cape Verde
Cape Verde, situated on the western coast of Africa, is a collection of 10 islands filled with white sandy beaches, vibrant culture and luxurious hotels. The beautiful island of Sal will surprise you with a wide range of things to do and see. You can visit one of the best beaches in the country – Santa Maria for some water activities including snorkeling and surfing. You can visit Pedra Lume town, which is well-known for its volcanic crater filled with salt sea. The Salt Sea features warm pools that are salty – perfect for bathing and relaxing – don’t worry it’s impossible to sink in the sea. If you love sailing, you can take a luxury boat for a full-day excursion and explore the underwater world.
2. The Gambia
The Gambia is one of the smallest countries in Africa. It is a perfect tropical destination, with lush nature, wildlife, scenic lagoons, and culture. It also offers nature exploration with its Abuko National Reserve entailing a vast species of animals. If you haven’t explored the wildlife scene in West Africa, this is a great place to start. My highlight here is the Kachically Crocodile pools, ancient freshwater pools located in Bakau. You’ll get an opportunity to learn about the history of the pools – quite fascinating, and get up close with the crocodiles.
3. Saloum Delta, Senegal
If thick luscious forests, rivers, and wildlife excite you while travelling, then the Sine – Saloum Delta in Senegal is a must for you to visit. You can have your pick from any of the luxurious hotels or lodges in this area, and then go out to have fun and explore. Whilst your stay, don’t forget to take boat rides up the rivers and go sightseeing. Get up close and personal with wildlife at the Saloum Delta National Park, spend some time on the beach and explore the mangrove forest. The national Park is a UNESCO Heritage Site featuring stunning cultural landscape and marine ecosystem.
4. Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
If you are willing to explore new regions and places but are yet to get some actual experience under your belt, then Ouagadougou is the right place for you. The metropolis is the largest in Burkina Faso and it’s one of the most amazing capital cities in West Africa. However, there isn’t much to do and see in this city unlike other capital cities in the region. But if you’re looking for a place to relax, it’s a beautiful place to spend some “chilling” time. The city has a pulsating nightlife with amazing entertainment spots. You can explore the markets and buy some souvenirs, visit the grand mosque hemmed in the chaos of the market but a great place to explore.
5. Cotonou, Benin Republic
Cotonu is an underrated West African city. Although there isn’t much to do and see here, it’s a pleasant place for a weekend getaway. The city features a powerful bang of metropolitan vibe blended with African charm and appeal. With a wide range of spectacular beaches with golden sands, lined with palm trees, luxurious hotels, and several other attractions, you will discover that Cotonou is an amazing place to relax, unwind and enjoy the African easy life. You can visit the popular area of Piste Amalco, which is packed with quality hotels and restaurants as well as cafes. Some of the famous attractions in the city include Pendjari National Park and the Fetish Market, where you can buy a variety of dead animals for voodoo arts.
6. Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire
Côte d’Ivoire is an incredibly beautiful country, with its man-made attractions and pristine beaches lined with palm trees. Its capital, Abidjan is a great place to visit in West Africa. It’s a city of skyscrapers, filled with business opportunities. However, the city also features a variety of things to do and places to see. As the downtown area is for the businessmen and women, you will discover the Yopougon area is a great place to relax and unwind – filled with vibrant nightlife spots. The city features a mix of classic urban with African charm – a beautiful holiday in Abidjan is full of unforgettable experiences.
