Published: September 13, 2020

Africa is full of incredible places to visit – after all, it’s the second-largest and second-most-populous continent on the planet, with 54 different countries. However, sometimes it pays not to go to the obvious places, and instead choose a more hidden gem. With that in mind, here are six of the most underrated destinations in Africa.

Botswana

Botswana is the place to go if you want to meet welcoming locals and make new friends. Head to the markets to pick up some unique crafts, such as hand-woven baskets. Music and rituals are huge parts of life here, so if you get the chance to experience Tswana folk music make sure you do, as it will be a joyous occasion.

Tanzania

Africa is the home of safaris, and it can be hard to decide exactly where to go. However, there are many reasons to choose Tanzania. Head to the Serengeti National Park at the right time of the year and you will see the Great Migration – when almost two million wildebeest, gazelle and zebra make their journey from the park to the Masai Mara in Kenya. Explore the shores of Lake Tanganyika, where chimpanzees will be swinging through the trees above your head. Finish off your day by relaxing on one of the beautiful beaches in Zanzibar, or watching the sunset from a dhow on the waters.

Zambia

The two biggest towns in Zambia are Lusaka and Copperbelt Province, which are well worth a visit. Zambia is a unique place in that you will find European influence mixed with Bantu culture and again, exploring the markets will give you chance to pick up some beautiful, unique pieces. Be sure to visit Victoria Falls, “the greatest known curtain of falling water” in the world, and if you’re feeling daring, why not bungee jump it?

Zimbabwe

This is a nature lover’s paradise. If you’re more of a history buff, the ruins of the ancient stone city of Great Zimbabwe will make for a fantastic afternoon. This is one of those underrated destinations you simply can’t miss!

Madagascar

Made famous by the animated film, Madagascar really is a great place to visit for wildlife – although we can’t guarantee the animals will be as sassy. It’s the fourth-largest island in the world and is covered in stunning rainforests and unspoiled beaches. You’ll want to have your camera with you for this visit.

Morocco

Morocco is one of the most diverse countries in the world, as it is the coming together of so many cultures, inhabitants and religions all in one place. There are even laws in place to protect the country’s unique legacy and culture. It’s a colourful feast for the senses with delicious foods, public steam baths, and the Sahara Desert.

So, rather than choosing one of the obvious places to explore in Africa, why not go for somewhere more underrated and enjoy experiences that you won’t get anywhere else? Whether you head to Tanzania for a safari adventure or party with locals in Botswana, you’re bound to have an amazing time.
