Scilla: A Picture-Perfect Fishing Village in Italy

Its name originated from the Greek mythological sea monster Scylla, that apparently used to live here. Today it is a pretty fishing village, which is small nevertheless loved by the tourists. Its historic downtown even features the residence of the patronal saint besides other historic architectural monuments.

Meanwhile the bay is where the tourists huddle. It is lined with hotels, restaurants and cafes, providing everything one would expect on a relaxing holiday. The Castle of Scilla is situated on top of the hill, overlooking the sea and town. The local cuisine is proud of its fresh sea food, while the specialty is swordfish – a desirable dish.

Why to go there?

A very popular holiday destination, for it provides great facilities and a sandy beach with warm clear water. Moreover there is a historic old town, which allows to explore local history via a web of romantic narrow alleys.

When to go there?

Summer is the warmest and yet busiest season. If you would like to avoid crowds, go there in spring and autumn, when nature is still beautiful and the pace is slower.

How to get there?

By train – the easiest and quickest way to travel from Italian cities besides the car.
