In addition to being the capital of the richest country in the world, Doha also has a host of interesting things that will make you want to spend the rest of your life there. This is no exaggeration considering the huge amounts of money being poured into construction and how rapidly the city is developing.
Let’s take a look at some interesting things to do in Doha on your next holiday:
See the man-made island; The Pearl Qatar
Now, this man-made island is the definition of luxury at its peak. You You “can’t not” touch base here on the Pearl Qatar or you’ll miss the point of Qatar being the richest country in the universe. For instance, there is the picturesque Qanat Quartier, a lot of water adventure on premium styled boats, executive restaurants, shopping, entertainment, etc. you get the point, right?
Enjoy the best camel ride on the sand dunes
Climb on the back of a camel and ride across the dunes in the open. That is one way to truly enjoy nature at its finest. You can do it a hundred times and not get tired of the roller coaster. You can go on horseback, or you can go in a car. Whatever you want!
Visit Souq Waqif, a century-old market
Actually, this is a local market where traders sell stuff, but it is not just an ordinary local market. There is just something about Doha that makes everything spectacular, including their local markets. The Souq Waqif traders are known for selling beautiful traditional garment, soulful spices, unique handicrafts, and souvenirs. So, this is your chance to buy something very “Doha-ish” before you leave Doha.
The Barzan towers
The Barzan towers are some of the few edifices from the 18th century that is still standing till date. And no; it is not rickety, or going to fall on you if you get too close. As a matter of fact, it was a watchtower used by the military to ward off any possible invasion as of 1800 AD. It was renovated in 1910 and the maintenance is top-notch. These days, the towers are being used to inspect the new moon for accuracy during the holy month of Ramadan. Tourists are also allowed to climb to the top of the towers to enjoy a 360-degree view of Doha.
Spend some time at the Museum of Islamic Art
The architect that raised this building intentionally suggested that it be built on a standalone island so that no new building will obstruct it. That was in 2008, and it has been like that since then till now; unobstructed, ever so magnificent, and unique. You’re going to see great artistic displays in there from three different countries and counting, with some of the items dating as far back as the 7th century.
See the abandoned village of Al Zubarah Fort
Once upon a time, lots of centuries ago, there was a village in Doha known as Al Zubarah. It was full of life, and everything was pretty normal, until one day, civilization set in. A lot of disasters came along with it, and the once lovely people of Al Zubarah were forced to abandon their village. In 1938, its forte was restored, and it became Qatar’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site; with archeological remains that date as far back as 1700. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. You’ll learn a lot more when you visit this place yourself.
Jump out of a plane
If you are one of those brave, adventurous, fun lovers, then you’re going to love this. It should probably be on your bucket list, and you get to cross it out with a visit to Doha. There are many other places where you can jump off of a plane high in the sky, but how will you like to do that from the sky above the richest and one of the fastest developing cities in the world?
Visit Katara cultural village
This is where you get to see the culture of Doha with little or no influence of the western world. Do not be surprised if you recognize a famous spot in this village because a lot of photographers and movie makers can’t get enough of this place. A cool place to take pictures for Instagram, right? Eat the best brunch ever
The food in Doha is, well, rich! There is no better way to describe them. While you’re out exploring this wonderful city, you need to stop by at any of the restaurants and fill up on something whimsical and unusually delicious. They are always ready to offer familiar foods like cheese, bread, sushi, roasts, grills, etc; or any of their native dishes like saloona, machboos, luqaimat, and so on.
Do some shopping
There are many shopping malls in Doha, and you don’t have to travel far to reach them. All of them are unique in their own ways; some of them feature over 200 stores, and they have an endless display of world famous brands. They also have entertainment fully covered.
